We think you should check out this amazing documentary about an incredible story of a musician who went virtually unknown for 30 years in his hometown in the USA, but had a cult following in South Africa. It's called Searching for Sugar Man, and you can find it at a RedBox near you. The film won the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary, and Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
Here's a synopsis, to give you a better idea:
Searching for Sugar Man is a Swedish-British documentary film directed by Malik Bendjelloul, which details the efforts of two Cape Town fans in the late 1990s, Stephen 'Sugar' Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom, to find out whether the rumored death of American musician Sixto Rodriguez was true, and, if not, to discover what had become of him. Rodriguez's music, which never took off in the United States, had become wildly popular in South Africa, but little was known about him there.
We highly recommend you see it. Buy it or rent it if you can. It was a significant part of our inspiration to start Melody Fusion. We want to help talented musicians get found and sell music online so they don't have to struggle like Rodriguez did.
