Between him and the thing, an unknown expanse of featureless desert. It stretches on and on, past the curvature of the world. He has no memory of the life left behind, no abstraction of the thing in the distance. Not her shape, Not its scent, only the shadow of a promise. The time carved out by ancient hands, etched in stone, bears no meaning under the constant spin of light and star. There is no force, no alchemy to restore the strength lost from him. Under the zenith of a sightless sun, the wind leaves only the fingerprints of gods in the vertical dunes. --- But what is the shadow he seeks? Does she sleep in a crystal city? Frozen to the passage of time? Has it passed from the Earth like a season to return with a different bounty?
